The Great BTU Heist

Picture this: A perfect-looking 3-ton install. Superheat and subcooling within spec. Three weeks later, callback. The tech adds refrigerant because pressures seem low. Four days later, someone finds the real problem: a collapsed return duct.


The National Comfort Institute data shows the typical residential system delivers just 57% of rated capacity. The biggest thieves are airflow-related: 20-30% of conditioned air escapes through duct leaks, while ECM motors mask restrictions by ramping up RPM to maintain CFM. The system "works," but nobody measured static pressure, so the underlying problem goes undiagnosed. And refrigerant charge can't be set accurately without confirmed airflow first.

Jim Bergmann recently demonstrated the fix: Aeroseal duct sealing in his Ohio condo dropped a seven-degree temperature swing between floors to one degree. No equipment change. No refrigerant. Just stopping the bleed. The 2024 DOE Southface study found systems commissioned with measureQuick achieved 90.5% of rated capacity versus the industry's 57%.
