As the year wraps up, I want to say thank you. Not as a marketing message, but as a genuine note of appreciation.

This year reinforced why measureQuick exists. To support technicians who care about fundamentals. Who measure instead of guess. Who slow down when the industry pushes shortcuts.

We are grateful for the technicians who challenge us and make us better. The contractors who trust us with their teams. And the trainers and mentors who continue to raise the bar for this trade.

The HVAC industry moves forward because people show up every day and take pride in doing things right, even when it is harder. We are thankful to be part of a community that values craftsmanship, honesty, and accountability.

From all of us at measureQuick, we wish you and your family a peaceful Christmas and a strong start to the New Year.

One reminder as winter settles in. Cold weather evacuations still do not work. Hitting a deep vacuum number does not mean a system is dry when moisture is frozen. If you are being asked to evacuate systems in freezing conditions, the physics has not changed. If your boss asks why, feel free to share this letter. Good work means knowing when to say not yet. Sorry, I just cannot let this go.

Why Triple Evacuation and Cold Weather Evacuation Don't Work

Jim put the debate to rest with a real-world test on a 27°F day. Using a TruBlue vacuum rig and Testo 552I pump, he pulled a system down to 135 microns after performing a triple evacuation. Guess What? The system was still wet. The evacuation graph told the whole story: every pull followed the same slope, every decay rose the same way, and nitrogen sweeps had nearly zero effect on drying. The limiting factor was temperature, not technique.

Vacuum pumps don't pull moisture out. They create a low-pressure zone, and the system must push vapor toward the pump. When moisture is frozen, it produces almost no push. At -40°F (easily reached during deep evacuation), vapor pressure drops to just 96 microns. The pump wins the tug-of-war not because the system is dry, but because the ice can't push hard enough to register. The decay test is the only way to know the truth, and this graph proves it.

Choosing the Right Manometer

Not all manometers are created equal, and Jim breaks down the differences in a new video. For static pressure and gas pressure measurements, standard manometers from Testo, Fieldpiece, JB, Yellow Jacket, or CPS all work fine. But if you need high resolution for applications like duct testing or TrueFlow grid measurements, you'll need something like the TEC DG8, which offers accuracy into the thousandths without drift. The key considerations are accuracy and resolution: what can you reliably measure? All manometers work with measureQuick, and in the app, you can zero both the manometer and the software to get consistent readings. Just remember to zero in the same position you'll use in the field.

Stop the Facebook Guessing Game
